Deciding it was time for a change they formed Gentle Giant in 1970. Though the brother were unhappy with this new direction and tried to re-invent themselves before eventually deciding to disband in 1969. After being pushed into psychedelia by their label the band would achieve their peak with the UK Top 10 hit 'Kites' in the autumn of 1967. The young pianist turned down an offer to join the band in favour of launching a solo career, under the name Elton JohnĮnglish actor and musician Dudley Moore CBE also appeared as a guest on one of the bands tracks. Going in more of a soul and pop direction the band would briefly feature a future megastar called Reginald Dwight, who filled in briefly as an interim keyboard player when their regular fell ill. ![]() During the 1960s, Derek, Ray and Phil would form a Rhythm and blues band which would eventually be re-named Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. Later moving to Portsmouth, where third bandmate and brother Ray would be born, the brothers were taught music from an early age from their father who was an army musician turned jazz trumpeter. The band's story starts with the birth of Phil, who was born in 1937 and Derek Shulman, born in 1947, to a Jewish-Scottish family. The song which formed part of Travis' new album Utopia hit the Top 20 on Billboard’s pop chart and the Top 10 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Hyaena, which was released by the rapper earlier this year opened with part of the bands 1974 song Proclamation. Gentle Giant, which were formed by three brothers from the Gorbals in Glasgow in the 1970s, hit the chart heights after US hip-hop artist Travis Scott sampled one of their songs. A Glasgow progressive-rock group has hit the Billboard top charts almost four decades after the band broke up.
